lyrics
Back in the city where i come from there is an unknown
wealthy middle aged man who lives all alone
in a big old house in the conservative wing
down on the south side
still, he'd escape society to go away and hide
so he heads straight for the green belt
with his ninety dollar utility belt
that he bought at R.E.I.
he brings trail mix and beef cakes
Vitamins and Myoplex health shakes
yeah he's an outdoor kind of guy
he's home in time to watch the daily show
on his fifty inch plasma screen
on the way home he stops by whole foods
to pick up some organic greens
he decided a long time ago to leave his wife and kids behind
they never liked him much anyway surly they wouldn't mind
it was around the same time that his mid life crisis hit
this suburban utopia suddenly was shit
so he packed up everything
every single belonging
and he knew just where to go
in the heart of the greenbelt
cuz that's where he most felt
just like henry david thoreau
he brought an eighty mile long extension cord
so he could watch Saturday night live
he fell asleep just before eleven thirty
then he wet the bed and died
his body was found the next night
by a bum beneath the moonlight
he was shipped back to the city
his wake was attended by one
the only daughter from whom he'd run
she didn't cry as she read his eulogy
"Here lies the one and only texas observer. He had his priorities all wrong. He'll never get the chance to know his daughter now that he's dead and gone."
